Friday, Jan. 11, 2013--Cañas to Liberia
We moved into Liberia today. It's a town an hour further to the north and the city with the airport where Wes will go to fly home on Sunday. Our new hotel, Hotel Javy, is just past the hospital. While walking to it, we couldn't help but notice that there were THREE funeral homes across the street from the entrance to the hospital. Wes said he hopes we don't need to be treated there, since it's likely that too many patients don't make it out alive.
The day was super hot. Fortunately, the hotel provided us with a plate of fresh fruits (papaya, watermelon, pineapple, and banana) and a drink made with pineapple juice. It was so refreshing after the walk from the bus station.
The hotel is operated by two women. Normally, the son of the owner is here to help, too, but he is in Scotland studying for two years right now. He welcomed me on Skype and helped me and his mother communicate. He suggested that we let his mother cook our dinner, and we agreed.
In the afternoon, we walked back to the center of town to explore. There isn't much to see here. They do have a nice modern cathedral which had good cross breezes. And we sat in the main plaza for a while watching people go about their business.
Back at the hotel, we were served chicken in a tasty sauce with white rice, black beans, a fettuccine dish with an creamy egg sauce, a squash-like vegetable, homemade tortillas, cabbage-tomato-cucumber-carrot salad, pineapple drink, and slices of cantaloupe. Before heading back to the room, we skyped again with with the son and planned our breakfast for 8:30.
Tired from the heat and the travel, we stayed inside in the evening with Wes watching TV and me reviewing my Nicaraguan guide. I'll probably cross the border to there on Monday and expect it to be the best of the three countries I'm visiting on this trip.
