Books I'm Reading between Travels

Mudbound by Hillary Jordan--Surprisingly well written novel about a farm in Mississippi after WWII.  It would have been better if the last chapter had been left off completely, however.  3 1/2 stars out of 4

Beasts of No Nation:  A Novel by Uzodinma Iweala--Follows the life and thoughts of a young boy who gets conscripted into fighting in an African civil war.  Interesting pidgin English language construction meant to represent the style of speaking in the boy's native language.  3 stars out of 4

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro--A plausible science-fiction novel set in England that will shock and sadden the reader.  3 1/2 stars out of 4.  I highly recommend seeing the DVD with the same title after having read the book.

American Salvage by Bonnie Jo Campbell--A set of gritty short stories about hard times in contemporary life.  Very well written.  3 1/2 stars out of 4.
